Australian indie rock duo This Way North, comprising Cat Leahy and Leisha Jungalwalla, unveiled their highly anticipated debut album, “Punching Underwater,” on February 8th, 2024. Years of touring across Australia and beyond shaped their affinity for open roads and adventure. However, the pandemic forced them to settle unexpectedly in north-eastern Victoria, on Dhudhuroa country. This unexpected pause became a creative catalyst, fueling a burst of inspiration that led to the creation of “Punching Underwater.”
This Way North has earned acclaim as the “Best Regional Act” by Music Victoria, with three EPs under their belt and performances across Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, sharing stages with artists like Vika and Linda Bull, Ash Grunwald, and Kate Ceberano. Their debut single, “My Love,” featuring Inuit throat singing by Christine Tootoo, garnered national airplay on Double J and cracked the AMRAP top 5 charts, solidifying their bond with their dedicated fanbase.
“Punching Underwater” represents This Way North’s songwriting and performing peak. Co-produced by award-winning musician Ainslie Wills and longtime collaborator Jono Steer, the album delves deep into lyrics and music, meticulously crafted to unleash each track’s full potential. Recorded across Melbourne and Romsey studios, the album boasts a lush and dynamic soundscape, where Leahy’s powerful drumming and Jungalwalla’s intricate guitar work intertwine seamlessly. Guest musicians and co-writes with Bobby Alu and Little Wise enrich the album, exploring themes of self-discovery, love, self-confidence, and womanhood. Despite the introspective journey, “Punching Underwater” concludes on a hopeful note, embracing the possibilities that lie ahead. – Jason Felton
