Wisconsin psych country-punk band Cherry Death’s frontman, singer and guitarist Tim Buchanan has stepped out on his own with an engaging stripped-down acoustic country album, With Dusk and on His Own. This collection includes nine tracks and showcases Buchanan’s talent for polished lyricism and absorbing melodies in the spirit of Gram Parsons. The band features Buchanan on rhythm, lead guitar, and vocals; Amos Pitsch (Tenement, Dusk) on bass; Tyler Ditter (Tenement, Dusk) on lead and rhythm guitar; Ryley Crowe (Dusk) on rhythm, pedal steel and vocals; Colin Wilde (Dusk, Black Thumb) on drums, and Julia Blair (Bang on a Can) on piano and fiddle. Album highlights include: the laidback opener “Grinnin’”; the reflective “Maybe I”; the Neil Young-tinged “Saccharine”; the intimate track “Just Got Home”; the beautiful “Watch Over Me”; and the J Mascis-esque “Believe Me.” Tim Buchanan’s With Dusk and on His Own is a solid album and a great beginning to a promising solo career. I look forward to seeing how Buchanan continues to evolve on future releases. – Written by JFelton
