Genre-bending artist Toro Y Moi’s (Chaz Bundick) sophomore effort Underneath the Pine veers away from the chillwave/r&b/French house sensibility of the sumptuous Causers of This and into a sound reminiscent of disco funk. Featuring live instrumentation including guitars, synth, and organ, Underneath the Pine’s dreamscape is rife with pulsing rhythms, bass, and beats. At times Bundick even ventures into the dance track arena, as heard on songs like “New Beat” and “Still Sound.” Fans of the young musician will either love or hate the new territory in Underneath the Pine but ultimately it is a worthy endeavor. – Written by SMarx
