Finn Andrews, frontman and driving creative force for The Veils, has put out a self-released EP that was recorded at home and produced by Bernard Butler (Suede, The Libertines). Seven tracks long, Troubles of the Brain is a brief but memorable set of pop songs that are highlighted by occasional shimmering keyboards and deft mandolin. T. Rex has often been cited as a current influence for Andrews, and one can certainly hear Marc Bolan’s presence, especially on “The Stars Came Out Once the Lights Went Out” – a jaunty little tune that also has a touch of Arcade Fire with its poppy tempo and similar vocals. Other standouts include the emotional ballad “Grey Lynn Park” and “Bloom,” an upbeat track peppered with some dreamy keyboards. – Written by DBosket
