You can’t talk about The War on Drugs without mentioning Kurt Vile, former frontman and current indie rock favorite. But Vile’s solo gain is not this band’s loss; instead it is a movement in a new direction. Under the leadership of co-founder Adam Granduciel, the trio recently released an excellent guitar rock album Slave Ambient, the highly anticipated follow-up to the Philadelphia band’s 2008’s breakout hit Wagonwheel Blues. Thematically, it is a call to the open road, leaving town behind and the promise of something new, much like the band’s own regenesis. Musically, it is full of jangly guitars, ambient synth, traditional rock and soaring psychedelics. Standout tracks include opener “Best Night”, “Baby Missiles” (from Future Weather EP), and “Come to the City.” – Written by JFelton
