Michigan-based duo Michael Trotter, Jr. and Tanya Blount – aka The War and Treaty – are out with their debut EP Down to the River which combines old time spiritual/gospel-influenced vocals with undertones of the blues and soulful grooves. The band came together when the two musicians met following Trotter’s tour of duty in the Iraq War, and through the years the married duo have crafted powerful songs with themes about love, loss, grief, heartache and redemption, showcasing evocative lyricism and a harmonious and expansive vocal range. Album standout tracks include: the bluesy gospel infused title-track; the toe-tapping anthem “Hit Dawg Will Holla”; the tender ballad “Till the Mornin’”; the bluesy ballad “Set Your Soul on Fire”; and the uplifting closing track, “Wanna Get Outta Here.” The War and Treaty’s Down to the River is an excellent and polished album showcasing two very talented artists. The album is a breath of fresh air, encouraging listeners to choose love when it is not the easy path: “We must wash away the pains from yesterday in order to bathe in the opportunity of togetherness that today is presenting not only to Americans but to our wonderful world.” – Written by JFelton
