For over 15 years, M. Ward released some of the most consistent and enjoyable folk-tinged indie rock. On his ninth album, More Rain, his dusty vocals and signature sound remain at the forefront. However, subtle flourishes set it apart from the rest of his discography; examples such as the atmospheric rainstorm of the title track or the subdued electronic embellishments that pepper other tracks. Standouts on the moody collection include the dreamy “Pirate Dial”; the Neko Case backed “Time Won’t Wait”; the eerie ballad “I’m Listening (Child’s Theme)”; the lighthearted cover of the Beach Boys’ “You’re So Good to Me”; and the Peter Buck (R.E.M.) assisted “Temptation.” Filled with songs of heartbreak and hope, More Rain is another quality M. Ward album for people searching for a little shelter from the storm. – Written by JFelton
