SXSW 2011 superstars Wild Flag – Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney), Mary Timony (Helium) and Rebecca Cole (The Minders) – are releasing their first studio recording April 16th on 7” vinyl. Already viral hits, “Future Crimes” and the anthemic b-side “Glass Tambourine” feature the band’s brand of distorted rock turned psychedelia, with strong basslines and percussive beats aided by tambourine, electric guitar riffs, and strong keyboards. While the recording is tight (the songs were produced by Spoon frontman Britt Daniel) and captures the chaotic, raucous sound of the band, the recording doesn’t quite emit the same energy as their sweaty, insurgent live shows. With Chris Woodhouse (producer for the post-punk noise rock band A-Frames) slated to produce Wild Flag’s full-length later this year, I am absolutely looking forward to hearing more of the amped psych-rock gems from Wild Flag. – Written by JFelton
