Yellow Ostrich is a one-man operation from Alex Schaaf that blends interesting vocals with DIY, indie music infused with a lot of vim and vigor. Schaaf, a Wisconsin native who has since moved to New York City, shows off his knack for mixing in a capella and multi-layered harmonies with rough-and-tumble guitars and drums. The songs on The Mistress sound fresh and intriguing – part experimental/art house project, part familiar indie pop. “WHALE” and “Libraries” let the vocals set the beat and tone of the song with a constant loop of “ohohohoh”s. If Schaaf can create an album as strong as The Mistress with a low-budget bedroom studio, one can only imagine what he can do with more resources at his fingertips. – Written by DBosket
