Saskatoon based singer/songwriter Zachary Lucky’s fifth full-length LP, Midwestern, is an excellent collection of songs that reflects upon Lucky’s life as it changed over the years. A meditation on the changing perspective of one’s life through the passage of time, Midwestern reflects on finding love and experiencing heartache; becoming a father and remembering his own father; and how he is affected by the shifting state of the world. The gritty baritone of Lucky’s vocals add to the rich storytelling and spacious musical arrangements. Album highlights include: the first single and touching lament, “Didn’t Know That You’d Come Along”; a beautiful reflection on the past “Raining in December”; the slow waltzing “Back to the Country”; the toe-tapping yet poignant “Rock and Roll Dad”; the slow ramble “There Was a Time I Used to Run”; the existentially bleak “Moments of Time;” a sobering contemplation about the world on “Revelation Blues”; and the tender closing track “Sometimes I Wonder (How I Got This Far).” Zachary Lucky’s Midwestern seeks a return to simpler time and life in the country reminiscent of the stories passed down from a grandfather to future generations. Midwestern is a beautifully simple record that is a great listen. – Written by JFelton
